I watched an excellent documentary on Showtime last week. The entire program was based around the premise: What would a homeless man do if given $100,000?
A team of people came together and actually gave a random homeless guy $100,000 in agreement that they could follow him and revord his day-to-day activities after receiving the money. I’m actually going to explain what happened so don’t continue reading unless you want the spoiler.
The homeless guy gets the money and the first thing he does is buy a $10,000 car for his “friend” who isnt homeless. He finds an overweight hooker and a case of Budweiser and takes them to a hotel where he doesn’t shower, but has sex first. After he cleans up, he buys a gun and more beer.
He finally decides to find his long lost sister and buys a plane ticket to go visit her. A week after he recieves the money, still being homeless, he buys a $34,000 Dodge pick-up truck. Half his money is gone. The guy finally finds a place to RENT and buys a Playstation 2 and a television.
Over the course of six months, he wastes most of his money on beer and women and never once looked for a job. After 7 months he wouldn’t let the camera crew see his bank account statements. They estimated he was down to $3,000.
This goes to show that you can’t help people who have already hit bottom, and overall I think the documentary is tring to convey that we should let these people fend for themselves and find their own means of survival because they are worthless. Although true on some levels, I believe this was an individual case and not all homeless people would waste the money.
What do you think? Is it necessary for us to stop giving to the poor so they can help themselves?
Do you think every situation would be like his?
